About GREENGUARD

The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) is an industry-independent, non-profit organization that oversees the GREENGUARD Certification Program. As an ANSI Authorized Standards Developer, GEI establishes acceptable indoor air standards for indoor products, environments, and buildings. GEI’s mission is to improve public health and quality of life through programs that improve indoor air. A GEI Advisory Board consisting of independent volunteers, who are renowned experts in the areas of indoor air quality, public and environmental health, building design and construction, and public policy, provides guidance and leadership to GEI.

History of GREENGUARD

• GEI was founded in June of 2001
• To establish a true third-party product certification program based on proven emissions standards and to provide specifying and procurement professionals with a resource for low-emitting products.

What Greenguard Certification is:

• GREENGUARD Certification requires that all products be tested for wide range of volatile organic compounds (over 2000) and be cross-checked for the presence of VOC carcinogens, reproductive toxins, odorants, and irritants.
• GREENGUARD Certification requires that any volatile chemical found and known to have a regulated exposure level, must emit no greater than 1/10th the allowable occupational level or be no greater than the EPA ambient pollutant levels. This provides a safety of margin for all populations beyond occupational workers.

SCS
Indoor Air Quality Certification
• The Indoor Advantage™ certification program, developed by Scientific Certification systems (SCS), certifies manufactures on the basis of compliance with specific indoor air quality emissions requirements.
• SCS Indoor Advantage™ is designed for non-flooring products that are intended for use within an enclosed indoor environment, including: wall coverings, insulation, systems furniture, seating, casework, and paints.
• There are two levels of certification offered under the program—Indoor Advantage™ and Indoor Advantage™ Gold. Both certifications are based on the SCS standard EC-10.2 for indoor air quality performance, which was published in May, 2007.

There are three core requirements for product certification under the Indoor Advantage™ program:
• Submission of key documentation, including:
• Product formulations or component materials
• Manufacturing production protocols
• Quality control systems
• An on-site audit of manufacturing facilities
• Laboratory testing of product samples
